Module 6: Stuff

Global Washing Line
Download | | Print | |
A warm up game for pupils to discover the origins of the clothes they are wearing.
What to do:
This is a warm up activity to reacquaint the pupils with the wider global impacts of the stuff that we buy. You will need a map of the world and bits of sticky tape or pins. Ask the pupils to work in pairs (they might need help reading their labels!) to investigate where their clothes have come from. If they wear school uniforms, there will be some identical results, so ask them to include things like watches, shoes, etc. Not all labels will have necessary information, but you should have enough. Now give out the scraps of paper and ask the pupils to draw their items of clothing and stick them on the country they were made in on the world map. The object of the activity is simply to give a visual reminder of the global spread of the goods that we own, but you can use this activity to encourage a wider conversation about whether the clothes are new or second hand, whether the materials were actually grown in the countries mentioned or just manufactured there, etc.
